For over 30 years, the Jefferson Awards has saluted Jefferson
Awards winners as part of our national ceremonies in June. Every
year, the top stars are 5 "Unsung Heroes" selected from our Media
Partner network. They receive the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award
for "Outstanding Public Service Benefiting Communities." Their
names are not compelling. Their stories are. In 2004, there will
be over 1,000 local Jefferson Awards winners selected by our Media
Partners. One winner from each Media Partner is honored at our
national ceremonies in June. Then we select five national winners
from this group. We highlight these winners with 8 videos on the
home page of our website, with 5 videos in the 2003-2004 National
Television Special, and with 25 videos in the Jefferson Awards
Hall of Fame.
At the same time we honor 4 history makers, the nation's top newsmakers.
These honorees are selected in four categories: "Greatest Public
Service by an Elected or Appointed Official;" "Greatest Public
Service by a Private Citizen;" "Greatest Public Service Benefiting
the Disadvantaged;" and "Greatest Public Service by an Individual
35 Years or under." Please find these winners listed below by category.
Please see the Jefferson Awards Hall of Fame to view the top 25
selected from our past.
Over the years the "Unsung Heroes" stand side by side with the
national history makers. This makes the Jefferson Awards unique.
Our point is that the full scope of service to America ranges from
the U.S. Senate, the Governors, the Congress, the Cabinet and the
Supreme Court to volunteers in our neighborhoods. The spirit of
America is best defined by the grassroots "Unsung Heroes" who believe
that each individual can make a difference. Other nations have
Senators and Cabinets. None have the same spirit of volunteerism
and dedication to local community service.
